A broadband WDM polarimeter is used in online determination of the state of polarisation (SOPs) of WDM channels. Wavelength resolved SOP measurements and the degree of polarisation of a single channel indicate signal distortions which are caused by PMD, and may be applied to multi channel PMD compensation.
