The polarisation patterns for the first six vector modes of six-port couplers with either ideal equilateral or nonideal isosceles cross-sections are determined using formal perturbation theory. They are shown to bear a close similarity with the corresponding modal patterns of a circularly symmetric fibre or an elliptical fibre, respectively.
