High optical quality silica gel glass, prepared from hydrolysis and polycondensation of an ethyl silicate solution, was used for the first time to stabilise single mode fibre couplers. The gel-stabilised couplers exhibit minimal temperature dependence, high coupling efficiency, and relatively low insertion loss.
