Influence of adsorbed water on the electrophoretic mobility of titanium dioxide in non-aqueous media

Abstract

Electrophoretic mobilities of activated TiO2(anatase) samples dispersed in n-pentanol are measured. The adsorption of water and infra-red spectra at various activation temperatures are studied. Total water adsorption is divided into physical and chemical adsorption. Removal of physically adsorbed water is accompanied by an increase in electrophoretic mobility while the opposite is observed when chemisorbed water is removed from the solid surface. Results are best interpreted by assuming that different types of adsorbed water play different roles in the formation of the electrical double layer around the particles.
