Reactions of organothallium compounds with diborane

Abstract

A number of organothallium(III) compounds of the type ArnTIX3-n have been treated with diborane in tetrahydrofuran. For X = OCOCF3 and n= 1 a transmetallation occurs to give organoboron intermediates which, on hydrolysis or oxidation, give arylboronic acids or phenols, respectively, in yields of ca. 70% Reasonable yields are also obtained when X = Cl or OCOCH3 and n= 2, but little or no transmetallation occurs when X = Cl or CN and n= 1.
