The Mössbauer effect in tin(II) compounds. Part 14. Data for some chalcogenide halides

Abstract

The 119Sn Mössbauer data for Sn7Br10S2, Sn4Br6Se, and Sn4Br10Te and for compositions from the SnCl2–SnS system are compared with those of the parent halides and chalcogenides. The data for Sn7Br10S2 show the presence of two tin(II) sites but these are not associated with distinct Sn–Br and Sn–S environments. The data for all the phases studied are consistent with random distribution of halide and chalcogenide anions. The variation in Mössbauer parameters of Sn7Br10S2 with temperature and the development of colour in the chalcogenide halides is discussed in terms of direct population of solid-state bands by non-bonding electron pairs.
