Efficient energy transfer between nanocrystalline YAG:Ce and TRITC

Abstract

Luminescent nanocrystalline (NC) Ce3+-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Y3Al5O12:Ce–YAG:Ce) is prepared by a combustion synthesis technique that yields a highly porous three-dimensional network of interconnected 18 nm nanocrystals. Tetramethyl rhodamine isothiocyanate (TRITC) was conjugated to NC YAG:Ce by using glycine as a bridging molecule. Efficient energy transfer is observed from the Ce3+ ions to the TRITC molecules upon photoexcitation of the NC YAG:Ce–TRITC conjugates.
