Nitrite photolysis in the presence of oxygen. An improved synthesis of 32-oxygenated lanostanes

Abstract

Photolysis of 3β-acetoxy-5α-lanostan-7α-yl nitrite in the presence of oxygen affords 3β-acetoxy-7α-hydroxy-5α-lanostan-32-yl nitrate. The implications to synthesis of this modified procedure are outlined and are exemplified by the synthesis of the 32-alcohol (I; R1= Ac, R2= H) and the 32-aldehyde (II; R = Ac).
