Crystal and molecular structures of aquahalogenovanadium(III) complexes. Part I. X-Ray crystal structure of trans-tetrakisaquadibromo-vanadium(III) bromide dihydrate and the isomorphous chloro-compound

Abstract

Crystals of (I), trans-[VBr2(H2O)4]Br,2H2O, are monoclinic, space group P21/c, with a= 6·408(4), b= 6·550(4), c= 12·300(7)Å, β= 96·15(5)°, and Z= 2. The structure was determined by Patterson and Fourier methods from 372 visually estimated reflections, and refined by full-matrix least-squares to R 0·11. V–Br Is 2·539(1) and V–OH2 1·967(4) and 1·977(5)Å.

For (II), the isomorphous chloro-compound, a= 6·430(4), b= 6·439(4), c= 11·901(6)Å, β= 98·8(1)°, Z= 2; 126 visually estimated reflections were refined to R 0·12. Bond lengths are: V–Cl 2·361(2), V–OH2 2·024(5) and 1·961 (7)Å.
