Water-soluble and Lipid-free Fraction from BCG with Adjuvant and Antitumour Activity

Abstract

BCG has been used to influence immune responses1,2, but water insolubility and difficulty in administration have limited its use. Furthermore, the complexity of BCG causes various biological side effects that render the interpretation of results imprecise. I have isolated a fully water-soluble lipid-free fraction from BCG, called MAAF. This is not toxic and stimulates cell-mediated and humoral immune responses. The administration of MAAF with killed leukaemic cells (by irradiation) to mice receiving 104 viable L 1210 leukaemic cells inhibited the development of tumours such that 90% of the mice survived.
