Optical Study of Particle Size of Montmorillonite with Various Adsorbed Cations

Abstract

IN sodium–montmorillonite suspensions the single clay plates are largely separated from each other, whereas in calcium–montmorillonite they form aggregates or tactoids containing from 5 to 15 parallel plates1. This property of calcium–montmorillonite may affect its swelling2, negative adsorption3 and ion exchange kinetics and equilibrium4,5.
