Abstract
IN sodium–montmorillonite suspensions the single clay plates are largely separated from each other, whereas in calcium–montmorillonite they form aggregates or tactoids containing from 5 to 15 parallel plates1. This property of calcium–montmorillonite may affect its swelling2, negative adsorption3 and ion exchange kinetics and equilibrium4,5.
