Abstract
TISSUE culture investigations have demonstrated that severe cytological abnormalities and toxicity result when mammalian cells are grown in a mileu of heavy water (deuterium oxide)1–3. In work reported by Siegel et al.3, in which HeLa cells were exposed to graded concentrations of heavy water, it was found that increasing concentrations of heavy water produced variability in size of cell, giant and multiple nuclei, and nuclear pycnosis. These effects became marked as deuterium concentrations reached 50 per cent, and severe cytopathic toxicity was produced by concentrations of 90 per cent.
