Abstract
INCREASING attention has been given in recent years to the overflow of cold bottom water, formed by winter cooling in the Norwegian Sea, across the various submarine ridges separating the basin of the Norwegian Sea from that of the Atlantic Ocean. In June 1960, under the auspices of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, nine ships from five different countries investigated the overflow across the Iceland-Faroe Ridge by means of a series of parallel hydrographic sections between Iceland and the Faroes, and made direct current measurements at a number of strategic points.
