Biosynthesis of Plant Glycosides from Uridine Diphosphate Glucose

Abstract

THE formation of glycosides and gentiobiosides after adding phenols or other substances to whole plant tissues has been observed by several workers1–3. Extracts of Vicia faba were reported by Miwa et al. 4 to form glucosides from vanillin, salicylaldehyde and hydroquinone. Tabone5 prepared a partially purified enzyme from lentils which on addition of uridine diphosphate glucose and anthranilic acid formed a compound in which the carboxyl group of anthranilic acid was joined to a β-glucosyl residue.
