Product of Interaction between Influenza Virus Enzyme and Ovomucin

Abstract

THE presence of an enzyme at the surface of influenza virus was first suggested by Hirst1. Burnet and co-workers2 have presented much evidence to substantiate Hirst's assumption, especially by their discovery that the ability of certain mucoproteins to act as competitive inhibitors for hæmagglutination by heated influenza B virus3 is lost after pre-treatment of the mucoids with active virus. Serum mucoprotein, ovarian cyst mucoid, blood group substances A and O, gonadotrophic hormone proved to be inhibitors of hæmagglutination by heated virus and substrates for active virus.
