Musicianship enhances ipsilateral and contralateral efferent gain control to the cochlea
2017, Hearing ResearchCitation Excerpt :OAEs are bioacoustic (cochlear emitted) sounds measured in the ear canal with highly sensitive microphones that reflect cochlear health and peripheral auditory processing (Kemp et al., 1990; Probst et al., 1991). Activation of the MOC bundle dampens outer hair cell electromotility through inhibition, resulting in measurable changes in cochlear emissions (Bhagat and Kilgore, 2014; Bidelman and Bhagat, 2015; Guinan, 2006; Philibert et al., 1998). Germane to our investigation, several lines of evidence suggest that MOC function might be sensitive to the experience-dependent effects of musicianship.
Pure-tone auditory thresholds are decreased in depressed people with post-traumatic stress disorder
2010, Journal of Affective DisordersCitation Excerpt :However, as in depression, this disorder has been associated with modified intensity dependence of the P2 auditory event-related potentials. This dependence in PTSD was either in the direction of an increase (Metzger et al., 2008; Metzger et al., 2002) or of a decrease (Paige et al., 1990; Lewine et al., 2002). According to Metzger et al. (2008), the increased intensity dependence may be related to the PTSD symptomatology rather than to depression or anxiety.
Tone burst evoked otoacoustic emissions in neonates
2009, Brazilian Journal of OtorhinolaryngologyCitation Excerpt :Increased right ear click-evoked OAE responses are assigned to sound processing at the level of the cochlea and the brainstem, possibly facilitating further hemispheric specialized development for the processing of certain sound types36. Such specialization is attributed to the left auditory cortex37. Although lacking statistical significance, females presented greater response magnitudes in all analyzed variables in both control and case groups at 2 kHz.
