    Citation Excerpt :

This is concerning given that elderly patients rarely report abuse (Vierthaler, 2004), which was supported by our finding that few OB/GYNs had patients directly report abuse to them. As such, the implementation of brief screening tools (Bass, Anetzberger, Ejaz, & Nagpaul, 2001; Yaffe, Wolfson, Lithwick, & Weiss, 2008; Fulmer, 2003; Fulmer & Cahill, 1984; Fulmer & Wetle, 1986; Ferguson & Beck, 1983; Neale, Hwalek, Scott, Sengstock, & Stahl, 1991; Hudson & McIntosh, 1981; Reis & Nahmiash, 1998; Feldhaus et al., 1997; Carney, Kahan, & Paris, 2003; Bass et al., 2001; American Medical Association, 1992; Bass et al., 2001; McFarlane, Greenberg, Weltge, & Watson, 1995; Schofield, Reynolds, Mishra, Powers, & Dobson, 2002) could be useful in that it would reduce OB/GYNs' reliance on spontaneous patient report of abuse, and require minimal time commitments, especially given that there are tools as brief as a single page (Bomba, 2006). However, OB/GYNs were largely unaware of existing validated tools for assessing elder abuse, with fewer than 5% having heard of any of the tools inquired about in this study.
