Retinal damage secondary to the use of an operating microscope for cataract surgery (Berler and Peyser, 1983; Boldrey et al., 1984; Byrnes et al., 1992) or endoillumination during vitreoretinal surgery (Fuller et al., 1978, 1980; Kuhn et al., 1991) has served as further evidence of phototoxicity. ROS can be induced by energy transfer from a photon to a photosensitive molecule, and the subsequent reaction of ROS with the surrounding molecules can break their molecular bonds, a process called photoxidation (Fu et al., 2012; Gocke, 2001).
