Abstract

TZM alloy possesses high strength at elevated temperature but due to high volatility of its oxide, MoO3 the alloy undergoes catastrophic oxidation in air above 700°C. In the present study, development of high temperature oxidation resistant MoSi2 coating over TZM alloy was investigated by slurry coating technique. As-coated TZM alloy by Si powder was exposed to thermal treatment at 1200°C to develop MoSi2 coating. Characterization studies like surface, cross section morphologies, phase identification, evaluation of hardness, adhesive strength, oxidation resistance etc. were carried out to determine the quality of coatings. A double layered coating structure was obtained with thick outer surface layer of MoSi2 (thickness ∼ 60 μm) and thin interfacial layer of Mo5Si3 (thickness ∼ 5 μm). The coating showed good adhesion strength (∼ 25 MPa) and stable oxidation resistance with negligible mass gain at 1000°C in air.

When the oxidation temperature is higher than 750 °C, the rapid formation of MoO3 will lead to serious volume expansion and oxidation volatilization, and the release of internal stress will cause the shedding or even disintegration of the substrate material [17–19]. This disastrous oxidation greatly deteriorates the application of Mo and its alloys under the conditions [20]. Therefore, how to solve the rapid oxidation of such materials under high temperature has attracted extensive attention of scholars [21].

At the beginning of HPS, the reaction process was dominated by reactions (1) and (3), and MoO3 and SiO2 were generated. MoO3 would volatilize at high temperatures (above 700 ℃) [36]; however, because most of the gas overflow channels were sealed, some of the gases could not overflow, and the MoO3 and SiO2 mixed-phase (SGP) was formed. The oxygen partial pressure during the reaction interface decreased with increasing oxidation layers thickness on the surfaces of the particles.
