Short communicationEstimation of physico-chemical properties of ionic liquid [C7mim][BF4]
Introduction
Ionic liquids (ILs) or room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are composed solely of ions and are liquid at ambient temperature. They have many unqiue advantages such as tasteless, non-odor, non-polluting, non-flammable, easy product separation, easy recovery, easy to be repeated and so on [1], [2].
However, with further research, you will find that the accurate values for many fundamental physical–chemical properties of the ILs, which were very important for the academic study and industrial process, were either scarce or even absent [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10]. To expand our knowledge of IL chemistry and our interest in the tetrafluoroborate IL, we synthesized a new IL [C7mim][BF4] (1-heptyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate) and measured the density and the surface tension in the temperature range of 293.15–343.15 K. The interstice model was applied to calculate the thermal expansion coefficient of the IL, α, and the magnitude order of its value calculated was the same as experimental one.

Synthesis
1-Methylimidazole and 1-bromoheptane were AR reagents and distilled under reduced pressure. Acetonitrile and ethyl acetate were AR reagents and distilled. NaBF4 and acetone were AR reagents and used as received. Deionizedwater was distilled in a quartz still. Its conductivity was 0.8–1.2 × 10−4 S m−1. 1-Heptyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (HpMIB) was synthesized according to the literature [11].
HpMIB and an equal molar amount of NaBF4 were added into acetone, stirred 48 h, and filtered to remove the
Results and discussion
The values of density and surface tension of ionic liquid [C7mim][BF4] are listed in Table 1, respectively. Each value in Table 1 is average of three determinations.

A new theory named “The interstice theory for ionic liquid “ [51] has also revealed some interesting facts regarding interactions among ions on the basis of some assumptions [52]: (i) the ions in the ionic liquids may not be closely packed and there are some interstices present between them due to the large size and asymmetric shape of an ionic liquid.
