Abstract

Single-crystal Au nanosheets with {1 1 1} planes as basal surfaces have been synthesized on the basis of the polysaccharide chitosan. The preferential adsorption of polar groups in chitosan molecules on {1 1 1} planes of Au nuclei may account for the formation of anisotropic nanosheets. Appropriate precursor (HAuCl4) concentrations are vital for the formation of Au nanosheets. The Au nanostructures thus prepared exhibit interesting shape-dependent optical properties. This convenient, environmentally friendly and low-cost route may be amenable to mass production.

Synthesis

Chitosan flakes, from crab shells, (Practical grade >85% deacetylated; Brookfield viscosity >200.000 cps) were purchased from Aldrich Chemical Co. Hydrochloroauric acid and acetic acid were of analytical grade. Solutions were prepared with triply distilled water. All compounds were used as received. Chitosan was dissolved in 1% acetic acid solution. Due to the poor solubility of chitosan, the mixture was kept overnight until a clear solution was obtained. For the synthesis of Au nanosheets, 5 mL

The Au 4f7/2 peak appears at the binding energy of 83.4 eV (Fig. 1h), which corresponds to the metallic Au. The interaction between chitosan and the surface of Au clusters contributed the core Au to be in a negatively charged state, resulting in a smaller binding energy in Au 4f7/2 (83.4 eV) [29]. For high-performance sensor design, variables such as reaction temperature, pH, incubation time and the concentration of peroxidase substrate, were required to optimize.

In the synthesis of AuNPs, the perhaps most important issue is the choice of reducing agents and stabilizer to get the required sizes and morphologies of AuNPs for the targeted application [8]. Chitosan composed of randomly distributed units of β-(1–4)-linked D-glucosamine (GlcN) and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc), which is generally derived from chitin and possess abundant functional groups such as –OH and –NH2 groups, have become the most extensively investigated polysaccharides used as alternative reducing agent and stabilizer to control AuNPs characteristics and also provides sites for further chemical modifications [15–21]. However, the poor solubility of chitosan in neutral and alkali solution results in the reduction reaction only occurred in the acidic environment that makes the synthesized AuNPs not suitable for applications, especially in biomedicine and/or in cosmetics.

Polysaccharides, because of their availability, relatively low cost, and multi-functionality, become the most extensively investigated natural polymers used as reducing agent and/or stabilizer in the synthesis of AuNPs (Pandey, Goswami, & Nanda, 2013; Pradeepa et al., 2016). Among all polysaccharides, chitosan composed of randomly distributed units of β-(1–4)-linked d-glucosamine (GlcN) and N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (GlcNAc), which is generally derived from chitin, has gained the highest popularity because it can participate in both reduction and stabilization processes in the synthesis of AuNPs (Esumi, Takei, & Yoshimura, 2003; Huang & Yang, 2004; Leiva et al., 2015; Potara, Maniu, & Astilean, 2009; Tiwari, Mishra, Mishra, Arotiba, & Mamba, 2011; Wei, Qian, Shi, Ding, & Xia, 2007). It is well known that the properties of reducing agent and stabilizer determine the size and shape of the synthesized AuNPs (Hussain, Iqbal, & Mazhar, 2008; Shervani & Yamamoto, 2011).

In analogue to the bio-evolution which creates complex and “life-like” organic materials scaled in 100–109 nm in green and benign chemistry, bio-mimetic synthesis processes have also shown their potential to yield series of inorganic materials with hard-to-reach structures and properties with the assistance of biological molecules [12]. For example, a lateral dimension up to 20 μm was shown in bio-synthesis of 2DAC where proteins [13] and polysaccharides [14] were employed to direct the 2D growth of Au plates. We discovered the possibility of synthesizing single-crystal Au microflakes with the help of protein assemblies [5], despite poor control on their size, complicated synthesis procedures and sensitivity to reaction parameters.
