Methods
Two hundred and thirty-three consecutive patients who underwent PPV at Sydney Eye Hospital for retained lens material after cataract surgery between July 1, 1998 and October 31, 2003, were initially identified from a computerized search of the hospital medical records, following institutional ethics approval. Eyes with spontaneous lens dislocation, dislocated intraocular lenses (IOL) with no associated retained crystalline lens matter, or those managed conservatively (i.e., medically or by
Results
The study included 223 eyes of 223 patients over a study period of five years and four months, representing an average of 42 cases per year. The study population consisted of 95 males and 128 females, with a mean age of 76.4 years and median age of 78 years (range, 53 to 93 years). The left eye was involved in 106 cases (48%) and the right in 117 cases (52%). The mean duration of follow-up after PPV was 20.5 months, whereas the median was 14.8 months (range, four days to 5.6 years). Follow-up
