The present method has a higher detection limit and a dynamic range similar to colorimetric detection methods. Dynamic ranges of one to two orders of magnitude are sufficient for SNP genotyping (Petersen et al., 2007). As the detection limit for the presented method is high at present, it is better suited for analysis of targets prepared by an amplification process, such as PCR.

Enzyme labels were also used (mainly horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and alkaline phosphatase (AP)) and appeared of great interest when signal amplification was required. Practical applications using these labels on microarrays were reported, for instance for the detection of PCR products on nitrocellulose (Cretich et al., 2009) or agarose films (Petersen et al., 2007) or used in combination with multiplex asymmetrical PCR (Chen et al., 1998; Mao et al., 2006). Alkaline phosphatase was also used as a label for the development of low-cost immunotests on paper (Cheng et al., 2010) and for combined detection of DNA and proteins on a single microarray in microplate wells (Perrin et al., 2003).
