Fermented milk containing Lactobacillus casei Zhang and Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis V9 alleviated constipation symptoms through regulation of intestinal microbiota, inflammation, and metabolic pathways
2020, Journal of Dairy ScienceCitation Excerpt :Some research has reported that unsaturated fatty acids can accelerate the recovery of gut motility (Zhang et al., 2011). Bile acid biosynthesis is the top altered metabolic pathway enriched in serum metabolomics analysis, and a few studies have reported that bile acid metabolism in constipated patients was changed (Abrahamsson et al., 2008; Maneerattanaporn and Chey, 2011; Rao, 2018). Bile acids serve as physiological laxatives and can activate TGR5 expressed by enterochromaffin cells, which further release 5-hydroxytryptamine and calcitonin gene-related protein (Snape et al., 1980; Keely et al., 2007), and bile acids were suggested to improve gut motility via the enteric nervous system (Karlström et al., 1986).
