Incipient charnockite formation in the Trivandrum Block, southern India: Evidence from melt-related reaction textures and phase equilibria modelling
2021, LithosCitation Excerpt :Porphyroblastic Grt1 in both incipient charnockite samples shows nearly identical composition (Alm80–82Grs11–12Prp4–6Sps1–2, XMg = 0.05–0.07) to that in the garnet-biotite gneiss. These garnet grains show higher grossular, much lower pyrope than most garnet reported from garnet-biotite gneiss and incipient charnockite in this area (Endo et al., 2013; Hansen et al., 1987; Nair and Chacko, 2002; Raith and Srikantappa, 1993) but have similar composition to those reported by Fonarev et al. (2000) and Sreejith and Kumar (2013). Grt2 (in symplectite) from the incipient charnockite samples has distinct composition of Alm82–85Grs11–13Prp2–4Sps1–2, which is characterized by lower XMg (0.02–0.04) compared to Grt1 (Supplementary Table 2).
Decoding evolutionary history of provenance from beach placer monazites: A case study from Kanyakumari coast, southwest India
2016, Chemical GeologyCitation Excerpt :Choudhary et al. (1992) interpreted Sm–Nd garnet (550 Ma) and Rb–Sr biotite–plagioclase (440–460 Ma) ages of gneisses and granulites at Ponmudi in TB to coincide with Pan-African peak granulite facies metamorphism and subsequent cooling and upliftment of the granulites respectively. Fonarev et al. (2000) documented a short (100 to 160 Ma time span) metamorphic evolution of TB with three distinct phases of metamorphism at 540–600 Ma (M1: peak granulite facies metamorphism), 530 Ma (M2: early retrograde metamorphism with near isobaric cooling) and 440–470 Ma (M3: late retrograde metamorphism with cooling–decompression). EPMA U–Th–total Pb studies on monazites from gneisses of TB reveal Paleoproterozoic (~ 1.9 Ga) and Neoproterozoic (580 Ma) ages respectively from core and rim (Braun et al., 1998).
Paleomagnetism of ca. 2.3Ga mafic dyke swarms in the northeastern Southern Granulite Terrain, India: Constraints on the position and extent of Dharwar craton in the Paleoproterozoic
2013, Precambrian ResearchCitation Excerpt :The Madurai Block, lying south of the Palghat–Cauvery shear zone and north of the Achankovil shear zone, is characterized by hypersthene ± saphirine ± corundum-bearing granulites, pelitic and mafic granulites, hornblende-biotite gneiss, calc-silicates and intrusive rocks of ca. 550 Ma age (Janardhan, 1999; Tsunogae and Santosh, 2003). Further south of the Achankovil shear zone, khondalite, charnokite, metapelites and metacarbonates with strong imprints of Pan-African metamorphism constitute the Trivandrum Block (Fonarev et al., 2000; Santosh et al., 2003, 2009). The Madras–Tiruvannamalai (MT) terrain, a triangular landmass on the map of the ‘Northern Block’, is bounded by Mettur and Palghat–Cauvery shear zones to the northwest and south, respectively and the Bay of Bengal to the east.
