Znln2S4 microspheres have been solvothermally prepared at 160°C for 12 h with ZnCl2·2H2O, lnCl3, and thiourea as the starting reagents in ethanol. The morphology, structure, and phase composition of the as-prepared product were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). Results revealed that the prepared Znln2S4 microspheres were composed of sheetlike nanocrystals. The average diameter of the microspheres and the thickness of the nanosheets are about 1-6 μm and 10-50 nm, respectively. A possible growth mechanism of the Znln2S4 nanosheet-built microspheres was proposed and briefly discussed.

Similarly, (Fe)-Ni3S2@NF and NiFe-MOF@NF were also prepared by following the above mechanism. In the same way, Wen et al. [64] prepared zinc indium sulfide microsphere by simply solvothermal method by dissolving, ZnCl2·2H2O and thiourea (NH2CSNH2) in 90 mL ethanol with a molar ratio 1:2:4. The aqueous solution was then shifted to an autoclave and heated at 160 °C for 12 h.

The energy bandgaps of Y2ZnS4, Y2MgS4 and Y2BeS4 were observed as Eg(Y2MgS4) > Eg(Y2ZnS4) > Eg(Y2BeS4). The calculated bandgaps appear to be comparable with experimentally described values for Y2ZnS4 (2.10 eV) [7], reported bandgaps of Sc2ZnS4, and Y2ZnS4 (1.58 and 1.83 eV) [10], and the calculated value of bandgap for ZnIn2S4 [8,22]. These outcomes recommend that the investigated sulfides as potential contenders for photovoltaic application.
