The accent method of voice therapy: Effect of accentuations on FO, SPL, and airflow

Summary

The effect of the increased flow rate (ΔU) in response to the Accent Method exercises on fundamental frequency (FO) and sound pressure level (SPL) was studied in three subjects (professionally trained, trained, and untrained in this method). In all the subjects, the rhythmic accentuated exercises produced a variable degree of increase in FO (ΔFO) and SPL (ΔSPL). The professionally trained subject showed greater ΔFO and ΔSPL in response to the ΔU in the fastest tempo, which requires higher skills. Both trained subjects showed a greater correlation between ΔU and both ΔSPL and ΔFO, as well as between ΔFO and ΔSPL, as compared to the untrained subject. The effects of the accentuated exercises on FO and SPL in response to the increased airflow rate (ΔU) thus appear to demonstrate the treating effectiveness of the Accent Method.

In addition, the taxonomy should be dynamic and subject to modifications, according to the needs and advances of science. The literature shows several therapeutic programs3,18–35 and exercises36,37 that can be used in the treatment of behavioral dysphonia. Even though previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of the aforementioned programs and exercises, the design of existing proposals was not based on taxonomy of voice therapy,17 and so they cannot be classified at all levels, in all categories, subsystems, types of tasks, and degrees of freedom of each phase or session.17

Traditionally, assessment results are the basis for establishing a treatment program or for evaluating treatment outcomes. Therapeutic plans typically involve the use of (1) direct approaches that focus on manipulating the voice production mechanisms50–52 and (2) indirect, holistic approaches that modify the cognitive, behavioral, psychological, and physical environments via patient education and counseling.53 Art therapies, such as dance, music, play, and drama, introduce individuals to an expressive and creative manner of acting.
