Abstract

In the UK, long-parent households are often low income households: a summary account is given of the reasons. Methods for investigating budgeting strategies for food are reviewed, with results of recent studies in the UK. The negative nutritional consequences, as measured by nutrient intakes and dietary variety, of budgeting strategies currently adopted by poorer lone-parent households are discussed.
