Abstract

Sexual addiction has received increasing attention in the past decade. We review existing literature on

  • 1.

    (a) competing conceptualizations of this syndrome as constituting an addictive, obsessive-compulsive, or impulse control disorder;

  • 2.

    (b) symptomatology and progression;

  • 3.

    (c) etiological models;

  • 4.

    (d) treatment approaches.

Based on this review, we conclude by identifying questions requiring resolution via empirical investigation.

      At the recruitment stage, we did not screen for compliance with the ICD-11 criteria, we used a questionnaire to measure CSB symptoms severity. We recognize the limitation of using a self-report measure attributed to assessing sexual addiction symptomology10–12 but believe present results can be used to identify characteristics attributed to CSB symptoms. Therefore, we will use the term CSB instead of CSBD in this article, although we do not know how many women met the ICD-11 criteria.

      Citation Excerpt :

      Importantly, only three studies published to date have made use of a double-blind (Wainberg et al., 2006) or randomized control trial (Crosby & Twohig, 2016; Hallberg et al., 2019) design to evaluate treatment for CSB. At the outset of the present work, we set out to conduct a systematic review of empirical research on CSBs that had been published since Gold and Heffner's (1998) review of sex addiction in Clinical Psychology Review. In service of this goal, we reviewed all empirical research related to this topic published since 1995.
