Pre-ESKD Nephrology Care and Employment at the Start of Dialysis
2020, Kidney International ReportsCitation Excerpt :While trying to manage myriad of active medical issues in patients with advanced kidney disease, ranging from anemia to metabolic bone disease, issues related to employment may not be adequately addressed in the nephrology office. Yet, 21% of unemployed patients receiving dialysis indicated that they wanted to return to work,18 and a sizable portion of unemployed patients surveyed reported that dialysis interfered with their work schedule.33 A multidisciplinary pre-dialysis education program designed to provide realistic expectations about employment with ESKD, and to assist the home, work, and healthcare environments in supporting patients’ employment goals, may help patients remain employed.19
Patient and Caregiver Priorities for Outcomes in Hemodialysis: An International Nominal Group Technique Study
2016, American Journal of Kidney DiseasesCitation Excerpt :Patients ranked the ability to work higher than caregivers, and this is consistent with previous research on patient preferences for dialysis modalities.8 Gainful employment provides patients with a sense of self-value22,23 and is associated with improved psychosocial functioning and mental health.24 Our findings broadly confirm the results of recent research priority-setting workshops conducted with patients with chronic kidney disease, their caregivers, and health professionals9,14 in which outcomes ranked highly included anxiety/stress, fatigue, and the ability to work.9
Factors associated with self-management by people undergoing hemodialysis: A descriptive study
2014, International Journal of Nursing StudiesComparison of life participation activities among adults treated by hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation: A systematic review
2013, American Journal of Kidney DiseasesCitation Excerpt :Our hand search of bibliographies yielded an additional 10 articles. We included a total of 46 studies in the final review2,7,9,19,20,30-70 (Fig 1). Eligible studies were conducted over a period of about 3 decades (1985-2011), with more than half published since 2000.
Employment of patients receiving maintenance dialysis and after kidney transplant: A cross-sectional study from Finland
2012, American Journal of Kidney DiseasesCitation Excerpt :Moreover, because employment data were acquired from official government statistics, these data can be regarded as highly reliable and comprehensive. In comparison, most earlier studies used employment data that were self-reported and with variable percentages of reply, thus possibly biasing results.4,7,8,15,24-26 In conclusion, in this cross-sectional registry analysis, we showed that home dialysis modalities are associated with a higher employment rate not only during maintenance dialysis therapy, but also after transplant, and that the employment rate of patients on home dialysis modalities is similar to that for transplant patients.

Supported by a clinical research grant from Amgen, Inc, Thousand Oaks, CA, Epogen Clinical Grants Program. The project was conducted through the Medical Education Institute of Madison, WI, a not-for-profit, private research organization. Data were collected from 359 dialysis patients in 31 dialysis centers located throughout the United States.
