The cause of this behavior has been subject to discussion (e.g., Roberts et al., 1986; Brusseau and Srivastava, 1997). One potential cause is competitive sorption, wherein the impacts of such were maximal in the early stage (when all solutes were co-located) and then decreased with time as the individual solute plumes separated during transport due to chromatographic separation.
