Estimated prevalence of paratuberculosis in Missouri, USA cattle

Abstract

An absorbed ELISA for detection of antibodies against Mycobacterium paratuberculosis was performed on serum samples obtained from the Missouri Animal Health Laboratory. Samples from 1954 Missouri cattle representing 89 herds were randomly selected from samples submitted for brucellosis testing. The apparent seroprevalence of paratuberculosis in dairy cattle (8 ± 3%) was similar to that in beef cattle (5 ± 2%). When herds were classified as dairy or beef, 74% (14 of 19) of dairy herds and 40% (27 of 68) of beef herds were positive.

      Similar variation can be found regarding the apparent within-herd prevalence (WHPapp) in different regions of the world, for example, Europe, where prevalences range from 0% to 24% between member states (Nielsen and Toft, 2009). For the United States, WHPapp values of 6.9 to 10% are described (Thorne and Hardin, 1997; Johnson-Ifearulundu and Kaneene, 1999; Raizman et al., 2011) and in India WHPapp values of 13.4 to 42.6% are described in cattle between different states (Singh et al., 2008; Trangadia et al., 2012; Bhutediya et al., 2017).       Management-related costs are important to estimate profit in cow-calf herds. The herd level losses might have been underestimated using the 7% true prevalence derived from 3% seroprevalence (Roussel et al., 2005) because there are also reports of 5% (Thorne and Hardin, 1997), and 9% seroprevalence (Hill et al., 2003) in beef herds in other US states. There were mixed opinions and differences in the production metrics perceived by veterinarians and producers.
