Abstract

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is a versatile macromolecule, embodying functional characteristics of IgM, IgG and C1q. It might be particularly important in the early stages of a primary infection and during the window of vulnerability experienced by all infants following the decay of maternal antibody. Here, Malcolm Turner reviews recent studies of MBL which suggest the need to reconsider the importance of this protein in the innate immune system.
