Control of porosity and surface area in alumina : I. Effect of preparation conditions
Received 6 April 1989;
Abstract
As part of a study of the preparation of aluminas of controlled porosity and surface area, initial investigations have focused on aluminas prepared in the absence of additives that control texture. The pore size and surface area of aluminas has been found to be affected significantly by conditions of precipitation and ageing, largely due to the interconversion of amorphous hydroxide, pseudoboehmite and bayerite. Washing and drying were found to have small effects on texture except in comparative experiments in which sodium hydroxide was used as a precipitant instead of ammonium hydroxide. In this case, washing removed residual sodium nitrate and enlarged pore size. The effect of calcination of hydroxide intermediates was found to affect alumina texture in the same manner as has been previously reported.
