Dopamine depletion in the nucleus accumbens reduces exploratory behavior [39] and inhibits the preference for a novel environment seen in intact animals [40]. Given the fact that D3R are expressed in relevant amounts in the nucleus accumbens [41], it is reasonable to assume that D3R activation plays a role in the regulation of exploratory behavior and activity during exposure to a new environment.
