The combination of the evolutionary changes to facial structures and obesity increased the risk for snoring and sleep apnea in humans. Features of obstructive sleep apnea were noted in antiquity. In the 20th century great strides were made in diagnosis and therapy of OSA. Large polysomnogram recording on paper have been replaced by digital devices that store data on mass storage devices. Positive airway pressure devices and oral appliances are currently the mainstays of treatment, although in some patients surgery may be indicated.
