Growth and Neurotrophic Factor Receptors in Neural Differentiation and Phenotype Specification
2015, Neural Surface Antigens: From Basic Biology Towards Biomedical ApplicationsNeuroprotective effects of NGF, BDNF, NT-3 and GDNF on axotomized extraocular motoneurons in neonatal rats
2013, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :However, axotomized motoneurons exhibit a series of firing alterations and loss of synaptic inputs that are reversed by neurotrophin administration, demonstrating that although adult extraocular motoneurons do not depend on target-derived neurotrophic support for their survival, this retrograde signaling is required for the maintenance of normal firing and synaptic properties (Davis-López de Carrizosa et al., 2009), as also happens in CNS neurons (de la Cruz et al., 2000; Pastor et al., 2000; Benítez-Temiño et al., 2002). The high-affinity receptors trkA, trkB and trkC seem to be the pathway through which the survival-promoting effects of neurotrophins are mediated (Chao et al., 1992; Meakin et al., 1992). Extraocular motoneurons are endowed with trkA, trkB and trkC receptors (Benítez-Temiño et al., 2004; Morcuende et al., 2011) and, therefore, neurotrophins can mediate their biological actions through these high-affinity receptors.
