Abstract

The title compound has proved to be a mild oxidizing agent like the corresponding telluroxide or tellurone towards thiol, phosphine, thioamide, thiourea, thionoester, and benzylic alcohol. In addition, it serves as a selective catalyst for the hydration of terminal alkyne.

The title compound serves not only as a mild oxidizing agent but also as a selective catalyst for the hydration of terminal alkynes.

They reported that these aryltellurinic anhydrides are milder oxidizing agent than the bis(p-methoxyphenyl)telluroxide and can selectively oxidize substrates like thiols, hydroquinones and xanthates (Scheme 38). In contrast to the above finding, Ogura and coworkers, while studying the oxidizing capabilities of p-methoxyphenyltellurinic anhydride found that it is as reactive as its corresponding telluroxide and tellurone towards thiol, phosphine, thioamide and thioester (Scheme 39) [106]. In fact, the anhydride similar to the corresponding tellurone was capable of oxidizing the benzylic alcohols to the carbonyl compounds which could not be oxidized using the bis(p-methoxyphenyl)telluroxide.
