Meta-analysis and public policy: Opportunity for nursing impact

Nurses must be prepared to use multiple and varied strategies to influence public policy so that optimal health outcomes can be achieved. Meta-analysis, a powerful research tool, is one such strategy that can be used to inform public policy.

      Meta-analytic studies might also be done with findings from secondary analyses. Conn and Armer27 suggest that results of such studies may contribute to policy formation because they can examine multiple outcomes and examine program effectiveness. Secondary analyses of data about adolescent sexual behavior drawn from various samples throughout the United States could provide valuable information to influence public policy that would enhance the sexual health of adolescents.
