General regularities of catalysis by enzymes solubilized in reversed micelles of surfactants in organic solvents are discussed. The kinetic scheme describing the observed dependency of catalytic activity on surfactant hydration and concentration is presented, and a computer simulation is performed of the theoretical equations. Finally, possible mechanisms and the range of enzyme activity regulation in reversed micellar systems are qualitatively analysed.

In the present case a plausible explanation is that as the ester produced is more hydrophobic than the substrates, its driving force to diffuse to the oil continuous phase is more effective. Nevertheless possible conformational changes in the biomolecule in the reverse micellar microenvironment cannot be excluded [26]. Similar results have been reported for pyruvate kinase-catalyzed synthesis of pyruvate and phosphoenolpyruvate and ADP in CTAB microemulsion, on the addition of a specific activator, K+ [27].
