Publisher Summary

This chapter describes the PLATO system population dynamics course, which allows the student to obtain population projections for any country or region. The course makes use of the PLATO System—a computer-based educational research tool. The system encourages students to experiment by changing demographic variables for various projections. The student is able by choice of various keys to see visually in graphic form how each of the demographic variables can affect the size and age composition of any population. The System allows the student to explore many different simulations in a short time. Population size and composition and various fertility and mortality rates can be changed by students. Each change is made by pressing keys to indicate a choice from a list or to enter a new numerical value.
