Abstract

Water contamination by various sources like sewage, chemical pollution, and industries have drastically increased in the past few decades. In developing countries it becomes tedious to provide pathogen-free water for use. Hence efforts are constantly being made in the direction for water decontamination by various processes. Our chapter focuses on significance use of nanotechnology in water disinfection. Furthermore, it explains in depth the recent procedures put forward for synthesis of antibacterial metal, metal oxide, and carbon-based nanoparticles (NPs) as well as the mechanism by which the NPs act on disease causing organisms for complete water disinfection. It also discuss the current status of technology transfer, scale up, and challenges faced for water disinfection. The overall information may be highly useful in the field of wastewater management and bioremediation using nanotechnology.
