Abstract

Synthetic polymers are an important component of biomaterials used as implant materials, drug delivery devices, and tissue engineering scaffolds or hydrogels. This chapter attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of the synthesis and properties of nondegradable and biodegradable synthetic polymers and highlights trends in the chemical design of synthetic biomaterials.
