The ionKey contains a 150 μm i.d. separation channel, packed with 1.7 μm silica-based or hybrid particles, electrical column heater, nebulization gas channel, and post-column mobile phase modifier channel. This design allows the post-analysis addition of solvents to enhance the electrospray process and increase sensitivity without affecting the chromatographic separation [10]. In 2017 the manufacturer added the iKey™HT to the ionKey/MS™ portfolio.

In general, these chip-based platforms can gather all the chromatographic components into a single device attenuating the problems of extra-column band broadening. For this reason, several chip-based LC platforms have been reported over the last two decades [152–157]. From the author's point of view, this alternative mode of liquid chromatography corresponds to a smart alternative to the benchtop instruments when in-field analysis is required due to its smaller dimensions and reduced manufacture costs.

Currently, several chip LC–MS based instruments are available. A HPLC-chip/MS containing a credit card-sized chip, for instance, was introduced by Agilent technologies [154]. Fig. 6 shows the 1260 infinity HPLC-Chip/MS instrument in which the chip was connected to an external HPLC system.
