Abstract

Bone is a preferred target of metastasis in many cancer types. The highly specialized microenvironment niches in the bone and bone marrow confer unique selective pressures and drive distinctive evolution process throughout metastatic colonization. Previous research provide valuable insights, but several provocative clinical and biological questions remain. Recent technological advances may provide opportunities to answer these questions and lead to breakthroughs of our understanding and treatment of these highly painful diseases. Herein, we attempt to summarize our knowledge of bone metastasis, discuss potential gaps, and suggest future directions of research.
