Abstract

In an earlier paper, the authors suggested that bones from well sealed depositional matrices might be deteable by the U-series method. This paper presents the results of further case studies on bones from archaeological sites and also in vitro laboratory studies of the U-bone system. These suggest that the U-series method may only be of limited use for bones, and that in most sites samples are exposed to an unknown number of wetting events over their period of deposition. The laboratory experiments indicate a more complex process than the simple diffusion of U through the bone cross-section.
