Abstract

For cholesteric mixtures of two biphenyl liquid crystals, we show: (1) The BPI-BPII wavelength gap vanishes discontinously with pitch, thereby suggesting two possible BPII structures. (2) The Bragg reflections are all circularly polarized, contrary to existing theories. The temperature dependence of the BPI-BPIIA wavelength is well described by Alexander's theory.
