Experiments with 1.03 GeV 12C ions

Abstract

Some aspects of reactions induced by 1.05 GeV ¹²C ions are discussed. Elastic scattering cross sections on various targets from C to Pb indicate a marked nuclear surface transparency. A nuslear rainbow effect is reported for the C + C system. Projectile-like fragment distributions show the limitations of simple fragmentation models. Heavy fragments are obtained from different mechanisms, including large momentum transfer processes. Proton and pion emission cross sections are briefly discussed.

The temperature dependence of the optical model potential and of the nucleon mean free path

The complex nuclear self energy is calculated in nuclear matter at full and half density semiclassically at higher temperatures including Pauli blocking. From this the nucleon mean free path λ_mf is obtained in a wide energy region. For excitation energies per particle $E^{∗} /A ⪡ 8 MeV, λ_{mf}$ decreases drastically with higher temperature, whereas for $E^{∗} /A ≫ 8 MeV$ it decreases only weakly from the value of λ_mf ≈ 5 fm at T = 0.
Nuclear fragmentation processes in the 20Ne + 27Al system at 30 MeV/A

Inclusive energy spectra and angular distributions of Z ≦ 9 fragments from the Ne + AI reaction have been measured at 30 MeV/A. The spectra present three components. The high-energy component has a reduced momentum width σ₀ of approximately 65 MeV/c, which is lower than the values observed in reactions induced by relativistic heavy ions. Conversely, for the low-energy component, the results are rather similar to high-energy heavy-ion data.
Production of 17N and 16C secondary beams via projectile nuclear fragmentation

The possibility of producing radioactive secondary beams through interactions of 84 A· MeV ¹⁸O ions with thick aluminum targets (400–1500 $mg cm^{2}$ ) has been investigated at the CERN synchrocyclotron. The projectile fragments emitted at 0° have been analyzed by the beam line dipoles and transported over more than 20 m into the experimental area. Conversion ratios (intensity of the secondary beam divided by the intensity of the primary one) have been found equal to 5 × 10⁻⁵ for ¹⁷N and 7 × 10⁻⁶ for ¹⁶C.

Transfer of nucleons at high relative velocities

We discuss nucleon transfer between bound states of nuclei at high relative velocities. It is shown that the tails of the internal momentum distributions of the nuclear states participating in the transition strongly influence the transfer probabilities at energies between 30–90 MeV/u. Data and DWBA calculations show an exponential decrease of the cross sections in this energy regime and we dub it TGV (Transfer à Grande Vitesse).
