In the main part of this paper we survey some recent results on a semigroup approach to parabolic equations under nonlinear boundary conditions. In particular, we give a detailed motivation and a heuristic derivation of a generalized variation-of- constant formula, which is the basis for the whole method. In the Appendix we prove some new results about semigroups in interpolation and extrapolation spaces.
