The formulation of the optimal, linear, time-invariant, multivariable control problem with quadratic performance index is extended so that the solution includes multivariable integral feedback and model-following capabilities in addition to the normal proportional state feedback. The integral action is produced by augmenting the state vector, and eliminates offsets in selected output variables due to constant disturbance inputs. Inclusion of a setpoint vector in the performance index resulted in relatively high controller gains and a fast process response to step changes in setpoints. However, the “real” model-following approach for implementing step changes in setpoints gave greater design flexibility and reliable process responses. The practicality and excellent performance of control systems developed using this approach is demonstrated by experimental data from a computer-controlled pilot-plant evaporator at the University of Alberta.

Résumé

La formulation du problème de commande optimale linéaire, invariable dans le temps et à variables multiples, avec indice quadratique de performance et généralisée de manière à inclure dans sa solution une réaction intégrale à variables multiples et aptitudes à la simulation, en plus de la reaction proportionnelle d'état habituelle. L'action intégrale est réalisée en augmentant le vecteur d'état et élimine les écarts de grandeurs de sortie choisies, provoqués par des grandeurs perturbatrices constantes. L'inclusion d'un vecteur de consigne dans l'index de performance a eu pour résultat des gains rélativement élévés du régulateur et une reponse rapide du procèdé à des variations—échelons des valeurs de consigne. Toutefois, la méthode de simulation “réelle” d'un modèle pour réaliser des variations—échelons des valeurs de consigne a donné une plus grande souplesse de calcul et des reponses fiables du prochèdé. L'intérêt pratique et les excellentes performances des systèmes de commande réalisés en utilisant cette approche sont prouvés pour les résultats expérimentaux en provenance d'une installation-pilote d'évaporation commandée par calculateur à l'Universite d'Alberta.

Zusammenfassung

Die Formulierung des optimalen, linearen, zeitinvarianten, multivariablen Steuerproblems mit quadratischem Gütekriterium wird erweitert, so daß die Lösung multivariable integrale Rückführung und Modell-Folge-Tätigkeit zusätzlich zu der normalen proportionalen Zustandsrückführung einschleißt. Die integrale Wirkung wird durch die Zunahme des Zustandsvektors Verreicht und eliminiert die bleibenden Regelabweichungen bei ausgewählten Ausgangsvariablen, die zu konstanten Störeingängen gehören. Der Einschluß eines Sollwertvektors im Gütekriterium resultierte in relativ hoher Reglerverstärkung und einem schnellen Ansprechen auf stufenförmige Änderungen in den Sollwerten. Jedoch gaben die “reale” Folgemodell-Approximation für die Ausführung von stufenförmigen Änderungen von Sollwerten größere Flexibilität beim Entwurf und zuverlässige Prozeßreaktionen. Die Durchführbarkeit und ausgezeichnete Wirkungsweise von unter Benutzung dieser Approximation entwickelten Regelungen wird an experimentellen Daten einer rechnergesteuerten Pilotanlage—eines Entdampfers—an der Universität Alberta gezeigt.
